Event Recap: City Paper’s Best of DC Fete

City Paper’s Annual Best of DC Fete was held again this year at the Carnegie Library to honor the Best of DC, as voted on by City Paper readers and chosen by writers and editors. A portion of the proceeds from the party benefited Brainfood, a nonprofit youth development organization in Washington, D.C.  This is definitely one of my favorite events because I love food (and delicious cocktails)!! On arrival, I was greeted by a moving gold statue posing outside welcoming us in.

Once inside, the live music was playing and the cocktails were shaking! It was quite a scene and there were plenty of people there enjoying the VIP Cocktail hour.

Event Recap: She’s Unique 2 Year Anniversary!!

On a beautiful Sunday in March we celebrated the second year of the amazing She’s Unique boutique!!  Started by Katya what seems like only a short time ago, the store is everything a jewelry store should be.  Fun, modern, unique (like the name) is what will make you come into the store but the quality, attention to detail and the selection is what will keep you coming back.  It is a store where you can find the perfect gift for any female friend from a simple ring spelling out love to more expensive investment pieces that you know will be passed down to future generations (if they can pry it from your hands!!).  Now on to the party!!

bar a la spicy

We were greeted by a mimosa bar that was in a word: inspired!!  The bar included a mix of juices like Guava (my fave!!!), passion fruit and OJ with mixed berries to garnish.  All the small brunch bites like the little cheescakes above were made from scratch by my fellow contributor on SCDC, our food/entertaining specialist Jessica.  As usual, the attention to detail was flawless with vintage glasses and adorable photo props sprinkled throughout.

DSC00962

I somehow resisted the urge to eat it all!! Which was hard because Jessica’s creations are always delicious!

DSC00967

While it was definitely starting to warm up outside, Meaghan (District Sparkle) and  I were of the same mind rocking our black beanies and black leather jackets!!

DSC00975

Little time was wasted putting the props to good use as Angelica (Clarendon Moms) and Lashawn Daily (All Things Fashion DC) posed for a picture.

DSC00960

Kelly of Bishop Boutique stopped by to support her fellow store owner and brought some beautiful yellow flowers (which soon because a bright addition of color to our many photos lol).

DSC00988

As you can see…

DSC00985

Always fun to throw in a little shoe camera action!

DSC00977

My favorite of the day (other than our stunning host of course) was the flawless face of Michelle of Eat Play Style who’s hair and makeup gave me LIFE!!! That face was BEAT!!! (for those of you who don’t know that is a compliment).  But I digress. Back to the main event… THE JEWELS!!

Event Recap: Fashion for a Fraction

On a sunny Saturday in February, Washington City Paper hosted the first (and hopefully annual) Fashion for a Fraction Boutique sale at ideaspace at The Yards.

flyer 2

Thanks to one of the boutiques participating (THANK YOU CARNELIAN BOUTIQUE), I won VIP tickets which got me to the front of the line at 9am.  yay. (if you felt a tug of sarcasm in the yay you are correct, while I was super excited for the shopping, 9am on a Saturday to be somewhere is a little early for this night owl but I digress.)  Since my mom was meeting me there, I knew I could not drag to much or she would leave me in her shopping dust.  Sure enough I arrived to a brief hello before I was whisked off to see what she had found.

BRUNCH: Mad Momos

DSC09757So one thing I love to do on the weekend is BRUNCH!!!  Give me a good group of friends, some great food and never ending mimosas and it is a great day!!!  On this holiday, I want to share one of my new favorite places to go on Sundays, MAD MOMOS in Petworth!!! A couple Sundays ago, Mad Momos was kind enough to host a group of bloggering buds to come have brunch.  I had been once before with a friend on about 8pm for their brunch a couple weeks before… yes at 8pm… because their brunch goes until 10PM!!!!! Let me repeat, they serve brunch until 10PM on Sundays.  If that was not enough for me to love them, they then brought me a “mad-mosas” (they also offer “mad-marys”) a PINK mimosa… PINK from the delicious GUAVA!!! YUM!!!  And a love was born… But I digress.

DSC09718I met up with a lovely group of ladies who also blog and kicked it off with some pink deliciousness.

DSC09721I had the pleasure of sharing a meal with Eden of Garden of Glam, Sam Huang of Mad Momos (one of the co-owners) was our guide through the (delicious) madness, Carlis of Spicy Candy DC brought us all together, Lashawn of All Things Fashion DC and Haya of Good Good Gorgeous.

DSC09682They were kind enough to let us try their signature mad wings – “juicy tender chicken wings in our special sweet and smoky glaze, sprinkled with toasted cumin and fennel seeds” to start off the meal.  I’m not a wing girl really so I only ate one but I enjoyed it, the flavor was very tasty.  Another good starter treat we didn’t explore this visit but I have to plug are their momos… and of course you ask, What’s a momo? Well in their own words (aka copied from their website and menu) = “a momo is a tasty dumpling native to the Himalayan region. Almost all cultures have some variation of a momo – a savory or sweet stuffing wrapped in a sheet of pasta. Our unique artisanal momos are made on premise. We offer a fun, new, “mad” twist on the traditional momo with creative fillings, pasta and our dipping sauces complement each momo meal. Our meats are all house-ground.” But back to the meal at hand… BRUNCH!!! While the momos are tasty… their brunch is equally delicious and should be celebrated and shared which we did!

DSC09687Literally and socially as you can see… we definitely brunch blogger styles… some say grace together first, we instagram…

DSC09691We ordered

  • their signature “king” cardamom French toast served with nutella drizzle and bacon ($10.95)

DSC09698

  • the champion, two eggs, mad creamy grits, smash browns, bacon and toast ($10.75)

DSC09696

  • smoked salmon and eggs open face on Texas toast, arugula, smoked salmon, cheddar and eggs ($11.50)

DSC09693

  • fish taco platter with tilapia, garden greens, cheddar, black bean and corn relish, avocados ($11.25)

DSC09694

  • their signature shrimp with mad creamy grits – jambalaya shrimp with sausage over slow-cooked creamy grits ($11.75)

DSC09695

And devoured it all!!! And enjoyed the never ending flow of mad-mosas that graced our table!

DSC09702After we took a bunch of pictures lol… then we ate… and then we took some more!!!

film stripI love our different looks and fashions!! Speaking of fashion,

My skirt is one I made from an old dress that I cut the top off of but you can find a similar maxi skirt from the Gap.  The blouse was an excellent recent find at Hysteria in the Boutique District in Alexandria.  Rachel Roy top, normally about $348 but on sale for about $60!!!! SCORE!!  Leather jacket is an old favorite I found back in the day at Target.

Overall it was a great day and I would love to thank the wonderful staff at Mad Momos for making us feel so special!!

DSC09762Thanks so much and I will be back soon!!! Also shout out to our girl Carlis for bringing this all together!!! DSC09735Okay no more photos!!! But to see more on how we brunch… see our lovely brunch with the DC Repatriate!!! —> La Brunch Vita!!

Event: Fashion Redeux

flyerI had the pleasure of attending the first annual Fashion Redeux at the end of September hosted by Made in the District and Haute Haus Agency at Studio 52 (52 O Street NW).  It was billed as “a sexy ultra-chic original fashion preview – honoring sports stars, media personalities, fashionistas, entrepreneurs and celebrities that live in the Washington area – showcasing designs from 2014 Mercedes Benz Fashion Week collections” so it sounded promising. familiar facesWhen I arrived (on time as I sometimes do), the doors were not yet open but I was lucky enough to run into some familiar faces like Stephanie Anderson of SLA Management & Consulting and Joel Cas from What Do I Wear.

DSC08785Also chilling by the step and repeat was the first model of the night rocking some Stevie Boi shades and a two piece.  Definitely set the tone of what to expect inside.  Once the doors finally opened, the party seemed in full swing from the start.

DSC08797DJ Vicious was spinning some tunes and keeping the party hyped.DSC08795The Svedka and Vita Coco was flowing freely and definitely mixed together deliciously!DSC08794I also quickly noticed the dessert table deliciously enticing me!! But a passing food tray caught my eye before I could tear up the display!!Kitchen crayMeet Kitchen CRAY!!! The team from Kitchen CRAY lives in a world where “food is an artform and not just something that you eat”.  CRAY stand for Creative, Revolutionary, Artistic and Youthful. They believe that “food can bring us as people together, no matter what your background is” and I agree.  They make AMAZING food that taste as delicious as it is beautiful to look at.  I am a bit of a fan if you can’t tell and you will see more about them soon!! But I digress…DSC08802In tribute to the Fashions of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, local artists replicated couture designs by artistically painting them onto nude bodies. They were rocking some killer shade by Stevie Boi who I had the honor to meet and try on some of his epic shades!Stevie BoiIt was definitely very cool to meet him and see his products! It was also great to see some of DC’s Most Stylish List according to Fashion Redeux like Sunni from WPGC.SunniIt is always a pleasure to see Sunni at events, she is such a nice and fun person!!  It was also great to see another honoree Dannia Hakki of Moki Media.  To view full list of honorees visit http://www.fashionredeux.com/.  So on a final note, what did I wear you ask?head to toeI rocked a vintage peplum polka dot top that I picked up at an estate sale with an adorable leather and chain belt that I picked up at the Goodwill Gala combined with some Gap leggings and these adorable Shoemint booties that I am loving for fall!!

The Fashion of Goodwill Runway Show & Gala 2013 – The Art of Fashion

DSC08776

“If fashion is indeed art, then nowhere can you find a more diverse collection of fashionable art than at Goodwill of Greater Washington retail stores – where styles, genres, colors, patterns, brands, generations and genders are so universally represented! That’s why the popular Fashion of Goodwill Runway Show and Gala will return with an imaginative theme: The Art of Fashion! ”

DSC08360Last Tuesday I had the privilege of attending “The Art of Fashion”, the 2013 Fashion of Goodwill Runway Show and Gala for Greater Washington DC.  It is a fabulous event that highlights some of the wonderful work of Goodwill along with some of their great fashion!  Since this years theme was Art, they also did a wonderful job of tying in the gallery exhibits as well as some local young artists! Each ticket included one fashion show general admission seat, access to the trunk show, cocktail reception and heavy hors d’oeuvres, access to gallery exhibits, and free parking in attached garage (cause as much as I am a metro girl, this was a night to drive lol). When we first entered we were greeted by a fabulous crowd of people and a delicious spread of food including my favorite, DESSERT!!

IMG_20130924_201711I had fight the urge to eat all the macaroons that were delicious!!! Once we had tried all the delicious treats it was time for what was really important… SHOPPING!!!

DSC08365

My first find was these Bebe shoes which I would have made mine if they had been my size – the only downside to thrifting is one of a kind means you miss out if it’s not your size but I managed to find a couple coats (post on those to come) that are going to be perfect for the upcoming season!!  After browsing we went to take our seats for the show!!

DSC08369The President & CEO Catherine Meloy was our lovely host for the evening.  She is a delightful engaging and the right pick to move us through the night.  The runway was not the only featured art of the evening though.  In honor of the nights theme, Goodwill partnered with nearby Elizabeth Seton High School, whose students created their own works of art inspired by the Goodwill mission.

DSC08373The students seemed great and their artwork was even better.

IMG_20130924_201932It is inspiring to see such promising young artists.

gladysAlso honored that evening was Gladys Lisanby, a philanthropist and longtime Goodwill supporter who had a Kevin Bacon relationship to Andy Warhol had an exhibit called Silver Clouds being hosted at the Artisphere.   Her brother-in-law Charles, was an Emmy award winning Hollywood production designer and mentor to the famed pop artist. She seemed like the sweetest lady and I enjoyed her humorous remarks.  After she was honored, the show began!!

Here are some of the runway looks from the night, styled by tu-anh, that graced the stage! It reminded me of looking in the mirror when I go shopping.  I saw some stuff I loved and I was definitely quick to head back up to the pop up to take some of the gems home!

DSC08758I feel like the quote on the way up really fit the night!! After going through the racks, I ended up leaving with 3 bags of new clothes without breaking the bank which is why I love Goodwill!!!

DSC08743The artwork I really wanted to take home was the fun pop art they had about Goodwill like the one pictured above.  They were one of my favorite parts of the night and definitely gave me a good laugh.

cartoonThe artist did a wonderful job! I also had a wonderful time with my frequent and favorite event companion, Carlis of Spicy Candy DC.

DSC08769She always makes a wonderful evening even better and I’m so happy to have her as my friend!DSC08775Also shout out to Brendan Hurley, Executive Producer of the show. This show is one of the premier events in our nation’s capital and the 2013 Gala raised thousands of dollars to support Goodwill’s mission to transform lives and communities through the power of education and employment.  I was honored to be a part of this special night!

DSC08747Thanks again for kicking off my fall wardrobe!

OMG I WON!!! Popsugar Happiest Hour with Lauren Conrad – Part 2

So the nice thing about a party out of town is that since you have to pack in advance, there is much less of that pre-event, what to wear scramble or mind changing that comes for those of us who are still flying by the seat of our fashionable pants!! While I’m sure I have many fashion friends who plan outfits in advance, lay it all out, line up the shoes and jewels and have hair photos ready to go for inspiration, I haven’t quite mastered that yet. I’m never totally sure what the final product will be until probably minutes before walking out the door, and even then I might have some last minute inspiration to add a bow or bangle, change my earrings (which I almost always wear thanks to the voice of my mother in my head) or wear a different shoe! However call it a need to pack or more likely the excitement of meeting Ms. Conrad (AKA LC lol), this outfit was lined up and ready to go!!

Malibu Island Spiced Summer Soiree With Lauren Conrad Hosted By POPSUGARMy previous recent trip to LA resulted in an epic shoe haul from the Nordstroms Rack that included some killer heels from Vince Camuto that had a beautiful lime green color in the front that perfectly matched an adorable Rebecca Taylor dress that I had picked up last summer from Dash Miami. I definitely had to rock my rose gold double chain BaubleBar necklace from my Popsugar Must Have Box with it!!

Malibu Island Spiced Summer Soiree With Lauren Conrad Hosted By POPSUGARI think it was the perfect outfit choice for an LA party with Popsugar!!! It was also nice getting ready with a view of Skybar so we could know just the right time to arrive lol. When we got down there Skybar had been transformed with pink lights, Popsugar pillows and bottles of Malibu Island Spiced.

DSC07803There was an adorable step and repeat display you can see in the pictures behind us and a bar with their Malibu Island Spiced featured drinks.

20130828_194521My favorite was definitely the Ohh La La which had Malibu Island Spiced and Elderflower liqueur in it. Once we picked our drinks we had a blast at Lauren Conrad‘s garnish bar decorating them with edible flowers, gold sprinkles, rock candy or fruit. With all the options, we were able to try something different with each drink!

DSC07806Rock candy and pink straws make everything better!! Overall it was an awesome time, Lauren Conrad was the sweetest along with all the AMAZING Popsugar staff that made this possible. I also want to shout out Malibu Rum, Virgin America and the Mondrian LA of the Morgan Hotel Group because they also contributed to making this trip EPIC!! I still can’t believe this really happened!! And if all that wasn’t enough, they gave everyone these adorable boat bags with some of their Must Have Goodies inside!!!

DSC07834The DJ was great too so after the excitement died down a little, we danced and took pictures and just enjoyed time with fun friends who think alike because we all had dresses with fun backs too!!

DSC07840 DSC07839Hope everyone had an awesome end of summer and Labor day weekend!!! I’m back to my normal life in DC but what a way to end the summer!! Thanks so my BFF Carlis of Spicy Candy DC for making the journey with me!! Have a great week and I hope you enjoyed our trip with us!!
