Event: The new normal for hair care: Luigi Parasmo Salon

Luigi and I, Dannia Hakki and the wonderful food from Neyla

Last week I went to the beautiful Luigi Parasmo Salon in Georgetown for a cocktail soiree to showcase Oribe, their latest luxury hair products.  They had complimentary cocktails, hors d’oeurves from Neyla and 15% off all Oribe products purchased at the events.  Considering that these are some of the best products on the market, that is pretty unheard of.  Also when I arrived I found they had some of the great people from Oribe there to do consultations which I took advantage of!!

I arrived a little bit early so they were not yet set up but the nice thing about being the first to arrive is that you have uninterrupted time to talk to everyone.  One of the things that I really loved about this salon was the staff!! They all seemed like a close group of friends/extended family.  I found it genuine and refreshing especially since they acted this way before there was really anyone around to see them.  They were taking pictures together and joking around and just having a good time.  When they saw me sitting in the waiting area, they came over to make me feel welcomed and invited me to come on back.  Many of them complimented my hair which had me glowing from the start and I could tell they weren’t just saying it.  They made me feel like part of the group and were a blast to chat with.  The owner Luigi was delightful and very down to earth and welcoming as well so I can see where the staff gets their great attitude from.

I also ran into the fabulous Dannia Hakki, the Co-owner and Founder of Moki Media.  They are an entertainment, hospitality, design and fashion PR agency.  She is amazing at what she does and she put on a great event.  I really enjoyed getting to talk with her and her team while I was there as well!

On my way out I purchased on of the products that was recommended for me, the Apres Beach: Wave and Shine Spray. I’m not going to do a full blown review because I’ve only used it once but once was enough to sell me!  When I used it on the fro, I was able to slick back the front in a way that kept the hair out of my face which is why I usually rock the headband.  I’ll have to experiment some more to see what else I can do with it!  Overall it was a great night and I will have to go back and get some services from the fabulous staff!!

Event: District Sample Sale Recap

New Hair option courtesy of NeKenya of PR at Partners in Mazza Gallerie, Music from DJ Neekola, the awesome new trench poncho (from Babe boutique) that I found for fall and the awesome silent auction!!

On September 11th, I went to the Annaul District Sample Sale.  The press on the website states that “The District Sample Sale is the Washington region’s biggest and best high-end bargain shopping event. The DSS features over 20 top designer clothing and shoe boutiques selling their end-of-season wares at liquidation-level prices, with many previewing their upcoming season looks at DSS-exclusive pricing. The District Sample Sale also features cocktails, hors d’oeuvres from our participating restaurants, a fashion-focused silent auction, raffle, goodie bag (with VIP tickets) and more. Best of all, we’re an all-volunteer organization with 100% of our profits donated to our chosen charity and legacy charities each season. Over $266,000 has been donated to our charities since 2006.”  This year it took place in the former Filene’s Basement space in Mazza Gallerie which was a great idea because it is the perfect space for an event like this.  They did a great job of using the space which they had plenty of!

I bought my VIP ticket a couple months ago and was really looking forward to it because I had heard so many great things!!  “The east coast’s largest charity shopping event” is a pretty big selling point!! The cocktails and hors d’oeuvres were a pretty big draw as well lol.  I arrived a little after 5:30 and was pretty much able to go right in which is nice.  The one good thing I did find about VIP was that I had very little wait time and getting in early allows for a more relaxed shopping and browsing experience with a smaller crowd which was nice.  The layout was pretty well done with the food and services around the edge and the clothes mainly in the center.  Some of my favorites were definitely Georgetown cupcakes (mainly cause I’m a cupcakeaholic), Black & Orange and Ping Pong Dim Sum who were all were there with some delicious samples!!!

There were quite a few different boutiques present and ready with a variety of clothes to browse through.  A recommendation for all the boutiques next year would be to invest in the pop up dressing room that a few of them had.  I had a few exhibition moments while I was there trying to change in behind the 3 panel screens that did not really hide screen anything lol.  Also while I did find some great stuff, I was a little disappointed with the some of the prices.  I know they say up to 90% off but most of the fall items were about 20% off and the sale items were on average about 50%.  I mean I love any kind of sale but I was expecting some better deals than what I found. Don’t get me wrong, this is definitely a must attend event if you are a fashion lover however I don’t know if I got what I was hoping for from my first time.   Since this was my first year however, I am now better prepared for the spring sale!!   Also considering that this was for a good cause (to benefit the Sitar Arts Center), I don’t regret spending the money!! Plus they had a pretty awesome goodie bag filled with snacks and certificates from the various sponsors and participators which was really nice!!  Overall it was a great event and I am already looking forward to the spring!!

Review: Pitch Perfect – Out Oct 4

I went to a free screen of Pitch Perfect at the Georgetown a few weeks ago and it was HILARIOUS!!  We were actually supposed to see “For a good time call…” but the theater filled up and they offered this alternative instead and I am SOOO glad I went.  I already loved Anna Kendrick but Rebel Wilson sealed her fate as one of my favorite female comedians!!! This movie is like Glee goes to college and I loved every minute of it.
So what’s the rundown? The movie stars Beca (played by Anna Kendrick)  who is a freshman at Barden University where her father works.  She has no desire to go to college and instead wants to leave for California to be a DJ.  Her dad makes her a deal, that if she joins one group and really participates and still hates it after the year she can move.  The Bellas are the school’s all-girls singing group that is trying to recovering from an epically embarrassing previous year and are trying to rebuild.  The new team is an interesting group of misfits trying to find a unified voice and Beca is the spark they need to change for the better and to beat their male rivals in a campus competition.
Check out this clip to learn more but I would highly recommend it!! —-> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F03N-ApQdmw

Event: H Street Festival NE Recap!!! Sept 15th 2012

This weekend, I went one of my favorite events of the year!! I started the afternoon off right with a Barely Buzzed from Big Cheese which is my favorite and also it was the only one they had left lol.  Unfortunately some of my girls left because they couldn’t find parking and then I couldn’t find my other girls because of the overloaded cellphone systems that were not working (another indicator of how packed it was!!).  This is the upside to being a native though, within about 15 minutes, I had found some of my peoples.  But first I found the dance off randomly going on in the street that I stuck around to watch for a bit:

When I turned the corner after a bit, I came across the #CraftClubHouse.  It was a mini-festival curated by DCtoBC and TEAMBBC.  I arrived just in time for DJ Spicoli’s set which was awesome as usual.  It is really cool seeing him grow as a DJ, he is incredibly talented and is getting noticed which is awesome.  You can see him doing is thing for the crowd below!

It’s also nice to see DCtoBC doing big things (two events in one weekend, I can’t keep up with them anymore lol). These guys work hard and I don’t even know all the behind the scenes work they do to pull it off, we just get to see the epic finished events we all flock to (and yeah that’s cheesy pride you hear… it’s just nice to see people I grew up with doing big things and being successful!! It’s pretty awesome).

Some other artists that performed were some local talent:

  • Beyond Modern
  • Mathias
  • Gavin/Nacey Of Nouveau Riche
  • Ra The Mc:
  • RDGLDGRN
  • Redline Graffiti:
  • Reesa Renee
  • Rock Creek Social Club
  • Spicoli
  • Tabi Bonney
  • Track
  • Uptown Xo
  • Urban Cartel

Overall it was a pretty awesome mini festival that hopefully becomes a permanent part of the H street festival!!

After the main festivities, I went with some friends to Rock and Roll Hotel which considering that I had not really been doing as much day drinking as the rest meant that I was Sober Sally and got to laugh at everyone.

Here are some of my personal favorite highlights from the evening:

  • When we were leaving and my friend decided to try and surf on an equipment box which than crashed into the street and fell over so he took off running and since his phone was dead we lost him.
  • Hanging out with all of his drunk friends that I had just met after we lost him, and helping them get food because ordering Popeyes is hard…
  • Having said friends also repeatedly apologize because “If i were you, I would think I was retarded and I swear I really am smart, I’m just really drunk – is that a baby, why is there a baby in here at night, oh wait is only 9:30 so I guess it’s okay, wow i’m really drunk really early, sorry we started at noon…”
  • Spotting the two drunk girls below on a random deserted corner on my way home: Priceless.

Overall it was a pretty epic day and I can’t wait for next years festival!! Definitely will do some better planning next time though lol.

Event: Black-Eyed Susie’s Awesome Clothing Swap!!! (and some swapping tips!)

As you can see, I am quite delayed but here it finally is!!!  Last month I went to another awesome clothing swap at Black-Eyed Susie and before I get into how awesome it was I would first like to tell everyone to go out and check out her store!!! It is a really awesome spot and I personally wanna keep it around so more people need to go out and show it love!!!  It is a really cute spot so if you haven’t been there, go soon!!! We already lost it’s Vintage Darling, let’s not lose another treasure.

Now to the swapping!!! The only con about this show is that it is a little small come swapping time.  I have found myself stuck in the corner a time or two, however I keep coming back because despite that, I always come away with some awesome finds.  As I did the first time, I left with quite a few new items for my closet.  In fact, I ran into a few ladies from the last time and they again commented on how was I finding so many treasure so it made me think, what are my swapping secrets?!

Here are my top 5 swapping tips:

  1. Volunteer!!!: If you get the opportunity, volunteer to help out!! Most swaps appreciate the extra hands and it gives you a sneak preview of what is going to be on the floor.  Now to be fair, most places will not let you shop early which I think is valid but you do get to see what you might want to score when it starts.
  2. Get there early! The earlier you can get on the floor, the less picked over the items are so you can have first choice of what is there.
  3. DO NOT HESITATE!! If you see something you like, pick it up! Because it is likely that if you go back for it later, it will definitely be gone.  It is much easier to put something back than it is to pick up something that you missed.
  4. Circle back twice: People often put things back that don’t fit or they change their minds about so be ready to snag them once they are put down!
  5. Stick around until the end if you have time and volunteer again.  Most places need help packing up the clothes for donation.  Last swap, I found three pairs of jeans that fit me perfectly during clean up.  Do you know how rare it is to find jeans that fit perfectly?!?

Overall with each swap, my love of swapping grows with each and every swap and Black Eyed Susie’s is a swapping favorite!!! Check them out! http://www.blackeyedsusiedc.com/

Why I fell hard for @HawaiianTropic Silk Hydration Lotion Sunscreen

So I received this complimentary Sunscreen from Influenster for testing and review purposes.  This is the first product box that I have received from them and so I was a little unsure of what to expect.  Here is what I found:

First let me say this stuff smells DELICIOUS!!! I kind of want to eat it way more than I wanted to rub it all over me… but I digress.  In addition to smelling so great, this product did not have the chalky after feel that sunscreen normally does.  At SPF 30, it has enough protection that I could hang by the pool without fear of burning (yes black people can get sunburn, I know firsthand from college but that’s a whole other story). The product is described as having “ultra-luxurious hydrating silk ribbons that nourishes and pampers skin while providing broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection and 12-hour moisturization when out in the sun.”  When I first read it, I though it was a bunch of fancy wording but after using it, I understand what they mean.  They are making up words because the ones in existence are not adequate to describe this little bottle of joy.  I will disclose that I was already a bit of a Hawaiian Tropics fan, I’ve used their awesome tanning oil but this started a love that shall last through the ages.  You can find this product at most major retailers for only about $8.99 for a 6oz bottle.

We lathered some on when we were kicking it by the pool!!
