@dewdropDC Clothing Swap and Pop Up Shop

So I know I am totally behind, like a couple months but things have been hectic and better late then never right?

The DewDropDC Clothing Swap was back in November and it was my first swap, so I wasn’t totally sure what to expect.  My friend and I arrived early with our stuff all ready to go.  A line formed about 30 minutes before the doors opened and their first mistake was not using this time to collect the items from the people in line.  As we filled in, they collected and sorted our items and let us in.  However there wasn’t much to see because we were close to the front and so all the merchandise had not come in yet.  So basically we had to wait around for the rest of the people to bottleneck in.  Since there were so many people, they eventually stopped having the time to really inspect the clothing and pretty much just started dumping stuff on tables which created a bit of free for all.  I was able to find a few good items but also had a few snatched out my hands which was frustrating.

The space was nice but I felt back for the Hillyer because quite a few of the fingers that were on display were knocked off the wall in the shuffle.  Once we finally got some stuff we wanted, we gave up on the scramble and went to get our swag bag.  Now you cannot call a bag with a few flyers, a hair pin and a lollipop swag!!! You are just gonna disappoint people.  Call it a goodie bag, cause that’s what it was.  When we got home and went through our goodies and were trying on stuff, we discovered that 3 of our items had holes in them.  This is why inspection is so important as well as good planning.  Overall, it was a great idea and I will swap again but this one left much to be desired and could have been so much greater, especially for $10 a pop.

Resolution Support – Writing to Lose Weight

Positive shrinking: Writing about the things that mean most can help us lose weight

The secret to slimming could be as simple as picking up a pen and writing.

In a remarkable indication of the potential power of positive thinking in dieting, researchers found that women who wrote about what meant most to them each day lost significantly more weight than those who didn’t.

A study by America’s Stanford University and Renford University College in Canada recruited 45 undergraduates, none of who were thin and about 60 per cent of them technically overweight or obese

The remaining women were told to write instead about something that didn’t matter to them.

When the women were weighed again four months later, the first group had lost an average of 3.4 pounds while the others had put on 2.7 pounds – a more usual weight gain among students.

It is a dramatic difference and experts believe that, just as we eat when we’re depressed, making ourselves happier acts as an appetite suppressant.

The study used women because research suggests they are more vulnerable to weight-related stress.

‘How we feel about ourselves can have a big effect,’ said Christine Logel, the study’s co-author.

She believes the women who wrote about something they valued each day would have felt good about themselves and wouldn’t eat to make themselves feel better.

‘When something threatens your sense that you’re a good person, like failing a test or having a fight with a friend, we can buffer that self-integrity by reminding ourselves how much we love our children, for example.’

Past studies have have found that even thinking briefly about what you value in life can have a major effect on your sense of self-worth.

Prof Cohen used the same technique on underachieving ethnic minority students and found they were still performing better years later.

@CapFabb Meetup @madewell1937

Tuesday night I went to the CapFabb monthly meetup at Madewell in Georgetown.  For those of you who do not know what CapFABB is, it stands for Capital Area Fashion & Beauty Blogger which is a group that I recently joined.  I got lots of compliments on my outfit at work since I dressed up for the occasion (can’t go meet a bunch of fashion bloggers and not bring your A game).  In fact, after lunch one of my coworkers nicknamed me Sharice from MOS DEF – Ms. Fat Booty (Uncensored) – YouTube because a guy at the cafeteria apparently stopped in his tracks with his mouth open but that’s for a whole different blog post lol.

I arrived right at the start and there were a few people milling around and browsing.  Since this was my first meetup I wasn’t totally sure what to expect but when I got upstairs and saw the champagne, blue bottles of Saratoga sparkling water and even better CUPCAKES(!!!) I knew these were my kind of women.  As people continued to arrive, I did some browsing and found some AMAZING blue pants on sale which I bought (I’m wearing them today actually… picture to come soon!).  I went back and was able to do some mingling but unfortunately had double booked that night so I had to run early but I am soo glad I went both for the pants and the other women that I met there.  It got me excited to get back to blogging and to continue to branch out and see where this can all go!  Can’t wait for the next one so I can really mingle and meet all the lovely ladies.  It should be a big one too since it’s going to be their one year anniversary!!!

About CapFABB: The Capital Area Fashion & Beauty Bloggers (CapFABB) organization was founded by Liz Fassbender and Lacey Maffettone as a way for DC area fashion and beauty bloggers to connect, collaborate and organize events in the DC area. With over 200 individual members, CapFABB hosts monthly meet-ups and works to promote local businesses, designers and bloggers. If you are interested in becoming a member of the CapFABB organization, would like more information or would like to work with us, visit our site here.

New Years Resolutions

Alright so it is almost a few weeks into 2012 (I wrote it right the first time finally) and it is time to put my resolutions to paper and make them official and also make myself accountable.

  1. WRITE MORE –  I want to blog more and really do more with that so that is my first resolution (it’s like Jan 26th and I’m just posting so this one already needs work)
  2. READ MORE – I used to read all the time and now I only really read if it’s required.  I want to read at least a book a month and maybe even start a bookclub.
  3. EXERCISE – I have been really good about this so far this year sometimes doing two a days like yoga in the morning and gym in the afternoon.  Also not having a car has made me walk more than before as well.
  4. ORGANIZE EVERYTHING – I need a better life system so from now on, Monday mornings is my check in for the week to go over my schedule, figure out what is due and how to get it all done.  I also need to continue with my room organization.  Is it getting better but my room ate one of my dad’s expensive watches so until I find it, I cannot call it resolved!
  5. FRIENDS – I need to do a better job of keeping up with some of my friends.  I have quite a few from over the years but I am very much out of sight, out of mind at times and I need to do better about checking in and keeping up with what everyone is doing.  And reading their facebook timeline doesn’t count.

I think 5 is a good and manageable number of resolutions so I am going to end it there.

One night President Obama and his wife Michelle decided to do something out of routine and go for a casual dinner at a restaurant that wasn’t too luxurious. When they were seated, the owner of the restaurant asked the president’s secret service if he could please speak to the First Lady in private. They obliged and Michelle had a conversation with the owner. Following this conversation President Obama asked Michelle, “Why was he so interested in talking to you.” She mentioned that in her teenage years, he had been madly in love with her. President Obama then said, “So if you had married him, you would now be the owner of this lovely restaurant,” to which Michelle responded, “No. If I had married him, he would now be the President.”

    Michelle is a bad woman.

yesssssssss First Lady. such a great example for young women today.

    Yes!

“I think I love my wife.”

Event: Jeannie Jones’ (@kittyofthecity) Toy Drive for the Kiddies

@kittyofthecity’s Toy Drive for the Kiddies:  Last Saturday I went down to @Starbucks to listen to @IamNateJolley and @IamNobleJolley play it up with their mate Tyler to wrap up Jeannie Jones’ Camp Out for Kids.  She spent the night in Starbucks collecting kids toys for underprivileged children in the DMV and she has the tales to prove it!! The parade of people that came out to show their love (and to really see if she spent the night!) was awesome because they all brought TOYS!!! Once it was all over, I could see her trying to figure out how to get it all in the car but all in all I think that is a great problem to have!! Well Done!

Finally bringing metal and capitalism together, this pop-up’s got 30 local vendors (El Jefe Design/ Highway to Hill/ 60 Bugs) in to sell records, vintage clothes, and crafts, all while serving boozy specials and pumping tunes from DJ “Baby Alcatraz”, where you know the shower-room assaults are adorable.
