So not to give him a big head (and don’t tell him I said this…) but Cole Walliser is kind of the shit!!  You can tell that he loves what he does which makes his stuff fun to watch.  His stuff has a clean and vibrant cut to it (I don’t know how else to describe it… it looks crisp and I like it).  Anyway what I am trying to say is check him out and I think you will love his work too!!! (And keep an eye out for him cause I have a feeling he is gonna keep doing bigger and better things – this is only the beginning!)

Event: Capital Bacon & Beer Bash – Fort Washington @Groupon

Link: Capital Bacon & Beer Bash – Fort Washington @Groupon

Couple hours left (T-7:00 hours and counting) and I am still debating… The bacon part is a no brainer… I mean unless you don’t eat pork, you probably LOVE bacon.  Which I do (this great bar in Miami has bacon strips on the bar instead of nuts… LOVED IT!!!), however I do not love beer.  If fact we are still just acquaintances.  We say hi every now and then but otherwise we usually keep our distance.  But if you love bacon AND beer this might just be the event for you… and if you act fast there’s a groupon… what’s not to love?!

No Dentist Left Behind (Formerly Titled: Absolutely the Best Dentist) by John S. Taylor

This is one of my favorite essays on No Child Left Behind!!!

My dentist is great! He sends me reminders so I don’t forget checkups. He uses the latest techniques based on research. He never hurts me. And, at 52, I’ve still got all my teeth.

When I ran into him the other day, I was eager to see if he’d heard about the state’s s new initiative to help him succeed in his work. I knew he’d think it was great.

“Did you hear about the new state program to measure the effectiveness of dentists with their young patients?” I said.

“No,” he responded. “How will they do that?”

“It’s quite simple,” I said. “They will just count the number of cavities each patient has at age 10, 14 and 18 and average that to determine a dentist’s rating. Dentists will be rated as Excellent, Good, Average, Below Average and Unsatisfactory. That way parents will know which are the best dentists. It will also encourage the less effective dentists to get better,” I said. “Poor dentists who don’t improve could lose their licenses to practice in South Carolina.”

“That’s terrible,” he said.

“That’s not a good attitude,” I told him. “Don’t you think we should try to improve children’s dental health in this state?”

“Sure I do,” he said, “but that’s not a fair way to determine who is practicing good dentistry.”

“Why not?” I said. “It makes perfect sense to me.

“Well, it’s so obvious,” he said. “Don’t you see that dentists don’t all work with the same clientele? So much depends on things we can’t control.

“For example,” he went on, “I work in a rural area with a high percentage of patients from deprived homes, while some of my colleagues work in upper-middle-class neighborhoods. Many of the parents I work with don’t bring their children to see me until there is some kind of problem and I don’t get to do much preventive work.

“Also, many of the parents I serve have allowed their kids to consume way too much candy and soda from an early age, unlike more-educated parents who understand the relationship between sugar and decay.

“To top it all off,” he continued, “so many of my clients have well water that is untreated and has no fluoride in it. Do you have any idea how much difference early use of fluoride can make?”

On the Defensive

“It sounds like you’re making excuses,” I said. I couldn’t believe my dentist would be so defensive. He does a great job.

“I am not!” he protested. “My best patients are as good as anyone’s, my work is as good as anyone’s, but my average cavity count is going to be higher than a lot of other dentists because I chose to work where I am needed most.”

“Don’t get touchy,” I said.

“Touchy?” he said. His face had turned the color of a beet. From the way he was clenching and unclenching his jaws, I was afraid he was going to damage his teeth.

“Try furious,” he raged. “In a system like this. I will end up being rated average, below average or worse. My more-educated patients who see these ratings may believe this so-called state rating actually is a measure of my ability and proficiency as a dentist. They may leave me, and I’ll be left with only the most needy patients. And my cavity average score will get even worse. On top of that, how will I attract good dental hygienists and other excellent dentists to my practice if it is labeled below average?”

“I think you are overreacting,” I said, turning to some printed material about the new statewide accountability program. “‘Complaining, excuse making and stonewalling won’t improve dental health.’ This is straight from a leading member of the DOC.”

“What’s the DOC?” my dentist asked.

“It’s the Dental Oversight Committee, a group made up mostly of laypersons to ensure dentistry in this state gets improved,” I explained.

“Spare me,” he said. “I can’t believe this. Reasonable people won’t buy it,” he said with hope.

Help at Hand

The program still sounded reasonable to me, so I asked, “How else would you measure good dentistry?”

“Come watch me work,” he said. “Observe my processes.”

“That’s too complicated and time consuming,” I said. “Cavities are the bottom line, and you can’t argue with the bottom line. It’s an absolute measure.”

“That’s what I’m afraid my parents and prospective patients will think. This can’t be happening,” he said.

“Now, now,” I said, “don’t despair. The state will help you.”

“How?” he asked.

“If you’re rated poorly, they’ll send a dentist who is rated excellent to help straighten you out,” I said brightly.

“You mean,” he said, “they’ll send a dentist with a wealthy clientele to show me how to work on severe juvenile dental problems with which I have probably had much more experience? Big help.”

“There you go again.” I said. “You aren’t acting professionally at all.”

“You don’t get it,” he said. “Doing this would be like grading schools and teachers on an average score on a test of children’s progress without regard to influences outside the school, the home, the community served and stuff like that. Why would they do something so unfair to dentists? No one would ever think of doing that to schools.”

Legislative Rescue

I just shook my head sadly, but he had started to brighten. “I’m going to write my representatives and senator,” he said. “I’ll use the school analogy—surely they will see the point.”

He walked off with that look of hope mixed with fear and suppressed anger—the same sort of look I’ve seen in the mirror a lot lately.

History of this essay

John Taylor is a retired superintendent of schools for the Lancaster County School District. A graduate of Davidson College with MEd and EdS degrees from USC, he has served as a teacher or administrator in several of South Carolina’s most economically challenged school districts, including Allendale, Clarendon, Colleton and Dillon. He also has worked in Richland 2 and Rock Hill and served as an education consultant at the Department of Education.

John Taylor, offers this history of the above essay which he wrote while leading that district:

”The parody was originally titled ‘Absolutely the Best Dentists.’ It was written and sent to every newspaper and legislator in South Carolina a number of years ago in an attempt to point out the absurdities inherent in South Carolina’s then new accountability act which was focused on ‘absolute’ performance and threatened retention for every child who couldn’t meet very challenging grade level standards. (Not to mention severe penalties for ‘poorly performing’ schools, teachers ands administrators.) Since then it has traveled widely to the point that I have not been able to keep up with the uses; but I know it has appeared in teacher association publications in at least three Canadian Provinces and in Australia, as well as dozens in the USA. The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) seems to have given the story a new life.” Thus: No Dentist Left Behind.  The essay remains on the Lancaster County School District’s Web site.

Red State

I went a couple weeks ago with my friend to see Red State directed by Kevin Smith (@ThatKevinSmith).  While a few weeks have passed, I’m still not totally sure how I feel about the movie.  I think part of the disconnect is that my friend only told me that it was Kevin Smith film but not what it was about.  Then as the movie starts rolling he’s like oh yeah it’s a horror film btw.  So yeah it was good, I would recommend it and it definitely gets you thinking but it also left me hella confused which may have been the point as well.  Did anyone else see it??

WTF Kardashian Wedding Special Part 1 (and two just to get it over with)

Okay gonna keep this short and sweet cause I’m sure everyone and there mother is talking about this, probably far more than it deserves!!! All I do what to say is WTF does Kris’ Surgery have to do with a WEDDING SPECIAL!!! If I wanna see that alien mess I will do to extreme makeover or something but do not cut from photo shoot to them CUTTING HER FACE OFF!!! It was like the crowning moment in Knocked Up, you weren’t ready for it and it came out of left field and just when you think your eyes have stopped burning they hit you again!!! (and in this case, again, and again and again to the point that I am still a little scarred)  Surprising saving grace of the episode?!? Wait for it… cause I never thought I would say it… but Scott!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  He was funny as shit and down to earth… I think he finally loosened the ASscott around his neck!!

Also I am with Kris Humphries, you have been planning this since you were a child and were ready to stick any guy in there!!  I mean it is call Kim’s Fantasy Land or whatever: A Kardashian Event… Kris’ name is not in the title, I mean you already dumped on him and refused his last name after you were the one who brought it up and said you’d take it and then you kick him while he’s down and don’t even let him on the special title?!? That’s supposed to be your boo!!! Do better.

Also really Kim?!?! You registered for gifts?!? and not just any gift but Hermes and stuff?!?! A little appalled… I’m just being honest… we’re in a recession.

And with that I am done… might be back with more later but don’t wanna really talk about them ever again… think my love affair with Kardashians has come to a crash and burn end (but i still love Khloe and Lamar Odom!!!! That will never go away!!)

Here’s to Ms. SD… and an introduction to ME

This post is dedicated to Ms. SD (not my mother for those who know me, the other SD in my life lol)… thanks for repeatedly telling me to do this… here goes nothing!!

So for starter welcome to the mind of an “adult” (depends who you ask) with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.  I was diagnosed as a child and since it colors much of what I do, I’ve decided to let it fly free in my blog so good luck!!! Sometimes you’ll follow my train of thought, sometimes you won’t, just sit back and enjoy to ride!

I am a DC native (yes DC proper like my driver’s license says District of Columbia) who just finished my Master’s Degree in School Counseling and am enjoying FUNEMPLOYMENT (as my friend so appropriately dubbed it).  I do random various part time jobs such as child care, lots of Ebaying (selling not buying these days) and some other things that come my way. Which means, lots of RANDOM free time.  DC is in a pivotal time of change and I am enjoying rediscovering all the fun new things and some old things to do in the area.  Best of all, finding some really unique (and free) insider events.

So anyway that’s all I have for now.  Welcome to my world.  Let’s see what happens…
