New Series Coming in 2023

DCFunemployment is the blog that started it all. Can you believe I started this page 11 years ago this past October?? Where did the time go?!?! (Should I plan a party?!?) I am super excited to return to this space with a fresh new perspective and inspiration. I took some time over the last few years to write for different sites, expand my voice and write about different topics. I have missed yall and recently I ran into someone outside my friend circle who’s read the blog. Not only read it but is actually a fan and she talked about being so excited the site is back and it made my whole day! Sometimes I wonder if anyone’s actually reading this but moving forward I’m choosing to assume that EVERYONE is reading this and I’m leaning into my status as “The Plug”. I recently met an awesome human on a trip to Mexico and somehow despite both growing up in DC and having mutual friends, we had never met before. How Sway?!?! (OMG why did I just finally get that reference – but not going down that culture hole, just glad Sway is finally getting his credit for being right). It was the reminder that despite the world being small and it feeling like we know each other, there are a lot of dope humans that I know and care for or cheer on that you don’t even know exist. So allow me to introduce them to you.

When I first rebranded and moved the events to AsItHappens.co, I had to think about what to do with this space. So I started The Funemployed, a series featuring women doing what they loved and I loved cheering them on. They are some of the dopest humans I know and I get excited seeing them out in the world doing amazing things. Not to say I had ANYthing to do with these queens success because they were all dope long before I featured them, it’s just nice to see the world see what you saw in them. I started the series in 2016 and paused it in 2018. It was supposed to be a brief break but right as I made plans to return, the world broke into a global pandemic. So I had to make a different sort of pivot and postpone the return. Now that WeThePeople is back, it’s time for a new series on DCFunemployment. I have a wonderful network of friends, aquientences and cool kids that I really think you need to know. I went to a talk a few years ago with Issa Rae and something she talked about how folks often look up for people to connect with when they should really be looking around and building with their peers around them. So consider this my community service to the creative community.

The funemployment only featured woman but I am opening this series up to all the dope humans I think you should meet so expect to see all kinds of people from all walks of life. Sharing their dopeness and helping more folks in the world know how great they are is literally the least that I can do. As outside reopens and I’m out in the world meeting more incredible people, I’ve also started handing out feature packets. Basically they are little packets reminding people how dope they are and inviting them to be featured on the site. I started them with an extra deck I had from Smudge and some little cards with encouraging notes along with some cute eagle pins I had. Starting in January when I launch this new series, I will also be reaching out to different small businesses’ to feature them in the feature packets (pictured above). So if you have someone you think I should feature or a small business I should support let me know!!

I am excited to launch this new series and introduce to some of the incredible people I know and meet in my travels. Maybe some of my readers like you too!!
